Whakanui i te Wiki o Te Reo Māori

Mercy Hospital staff celebrated te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) with waiata, hāngi for lunch, poi dancing and flax weaving.

The week began with staff coming together at 12.00 pm on Monday 14 September for a Māori language moment, singing 'Tūtira mai ngā iwi.'

Mercy's Mission Coordinator Alofa Lale organised the programme of events, supported by Lucy Tamatea-Smith. Lucy joined staff in the cafeteria on Tuesday and Thursday to teach traditional flax weaving. A hangi lunch was on offer for staff on Wednesday and proved very popular with all 50 meals sold out. Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori ended with a poi lesson for staff on Friday.

Mercy is committed to honouring its responsibilities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and giving staff opportunities to participate in Māori language and cultural activities during te Wiki o Te Reo Māori helps build understanding and cultural competency.
